Is YouTube challenging Kremlin media stranglehold?

Cult cartoon character Mr Freeman is part of a digital onslaught on the political establishment Continue reading the main storyRelated StoriesNo end in sight to era of PutinRussians split over Putin for presidentRussia country profile Media control has been one of the key factors that have allowed Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to dominate Russia's political landscape since he was first elected president in 2000.

As the country prepares for parliamentary and presidential elections, though, there are signs that the Kremlin is facing a fresh media challenge in the form of an increasingly politicised audience on YouTube.

Over the past few weeks, a number of Russian politics-themed clips on YouTube have achieved over one million views.

The videos are in a variety of genres - political polemic, satire and song - but they have one thing in common: a critical or irreverent attitude to the country's leadership - Mr Putin, President Dmitry Medvedev and their party, United Russia.

Earlier this year, anti-corruption campaigner and blogger Aleksey Navalnyy launched a web campaign against United Russia under the banner "Party of Crooks and Thieves".

One of the latest instalments in this campaign is a clip on his YouTube channel entitled: "Let's remind the crooks and thieves of their 2002 manifesto". The video lists what it says are United Russia's failures and broken pledges, and concludes: "They have not just lied, they have brought the country to such a state that these and other promises seem to be mockeries". It also urges viewers to vote for any party but United Russia in December's parliamentary election.

The video was posted on YouTube on 7 October. By 28 October, it been viewed more than a million times.

Satire

YouTube is not only giving a powerful voice to the opposition, it is also helping to revive subversive art forms.

TV political satire has been virtually extinct in Russia since the puppet show Kukly (along the lines of the now-defunct UK satirical programme Spitting Image) disappeared from the screens shortly after Mr Putin came to power.

Now, though, this kind of satire is making a comeback on the internet. Not all the satire is anti-government, but it is generally irreverent towards authority.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime arrives at the FCC, we feign surprise

You've seen it in the wild and even in the hands of ASUS honcho Jonney Shih at AsiaD. Now the tablet set to continue the Eee Pad Transformer's legacy has reared its 10-inch face at the FCC. Considering the Prime's leaked November 9th launch date, it's no shock to see the tablet now surfacing at the Commission with confidentiality agreements in tow. Most of the slate's internal goods are hidden behind that wall of secrecy, but we can confirm the de rigeur presence of WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities. Shih's already dished out some of this quad-core tab's specs, so we know to expect a mini-HDMI port, 14.5-hour battery, SD card slot and a destined Ice Cream Sandwich OS. The only remaining question is whether this second coming will pack any wireless operator-friendly frequencies. We'll keep you posted on any new developments, but in the meantime, feel free to traverse the spectrum tests at the source.

HP and Calxedas Moonshot ARM servers will bring all the boys to the yard (video)

HP and Calxeda's indiscreet partnership has been revealed to the world: Project Moonshot is a new server based around a brand new ARM-based EnergyCore system-on-chip. These new units are so efficient that a four core version, packing 4GB DRAM, consumes just five watts at full pelt -- for perspective, that's less than your average tablet. The other funky innovation is that all the server nodes now share a single power, cooling, management and storage system rather than carrying it themselves. In terms of space saving, the Redstone four unit chassis you can see in the image above can hold 288 of the little blighters. If you set your alarm clock early to learn more about efficient server architecture, head on past the break for two videos, including a tour of HP's server labs and some press release goodness.

HP server and infrastructure innovations advance computing at massive scale

PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 1, 2011 HP today announced a new industry program comprising a new server development platform, customer discovery lab and partner ecosystem to help customers significantly reduce complexity, energy use and costs.

HP's new program, dubbed Project Moonshot, combines with HP Converged Infrastructure technology to allow the sharing of resources – including storage, networking, management, power and cooling – across thousands of servers. It paves the way to the future of low-energy computing for emerging web, cloud and massive scale environments.

Project Moonshot is designed to fuel the advancement of low-energy server technology, while promoting industry collaboration to break new ground in "hyperscale" computing environments such as cloud services and on-demand computing.

Through these efforts, data center efficiencies are expected to reach new heights for select workloads and applications, consuming up to 89 percent less energy and 94 percent less space, while reducing overall costs up to 63 percent compared to traditional server systems.(1)

For companies with thousands of servers delivering web services, social media and simple content delivery applications, Project Moonshot is designed to deliver improved simplicity while achieving energy and cost savings never before possible.

Project Moonshot is based on experience gained through HP's leading low-energy innovations such as HP Data Center Smart Grid, which enables customers to double or triple their data center capacity,(2) as well as the recently announced HP EcoPOD, the world's most efficient data center. The Project Moonshot infrastructure is an extension of the industry-leading HP ProLiant brand of servers, which incorporates traditional x86 processors from Intel and AMD, and which has been the top server choice for 61 quarters.(3)

"Companies with hyperscale environments are facing a crisis in capacity that requires a fundamental change at the architectural level," said Paul Santeler, vice president and general manager, Hyperscale Business Unit, Industry Standard Servers and Software, HP. "HP has a strong track record of leading market transitions that enable our clients to stay ahead of the technology curve, maximize their ability to innovate and speed their time to market of new services while reducing costs and energy use."

Unlocking the potential of extreme low-energy servers

Project Moonshot is a multiyear, multi-phased program that builds on HP's experience powering the world's largest cloud infrastructures(2) and 10 years of extensive low-energy computing infrastructure research from HP Labs, the company's central research arm.

Reinventing the traditional approach to data center infrastructure by using Converged Infrastructure as its foundation, Project Moonshot unlocks the promise of emerging extreme low-energy servers by pooling resources in a highly federated environment to radically reduce space requirements, management complexity and energy consumption. It includes three essential elements to support the industry's evolution to hyperscale computing:

The HP Redstone Server Development Platform is the first in a line of HP server development platforms that feature extreme low-energy server processors. Initially incorporating Calxeda EnergyCore™ ARM® Cortex™ processors, future Redstone versions will include Intel® Atom™-based processors as well as others. HP Redstone is designed for testing and proof of concept. It incorporates more than 2,800 servers in a single rack, reducing cabling, switching and the need for peripheral devices, and delivering a 97 percent reduction in complexity.(1) The initial HP Redstone platform is expected to be available in limited volumes to select customers in the first half of next year.

The HP Discovery Lab enables clients to experiment, test and benchmark applications on the HP Redstone Server Development Platform, and other extreme low-energy platforms, as well as on traditional servers. The first lab is scheduled to open in Houston in January, with additional sites planned to open in Europe and Asia. With remote or onsite access, clients can work directly with HP engineers and industry peers to learn about the benefits of extreme low-energy servers for their specific application needs.

The HP Pathfinder Program, part of the HP AllianceONE partner program, is dedicated to client discovery efforts across the data center. It also encourages development of elements of the Project Moonshot program within open industry standards. The program includes independent software vendors – compute, storage and networking partners who contribute hardware, software and technical expertise. Initial participants are expected to include AMD, ARM Holdings, Calxeda, Canonical and Red Hat, with additional partners to be announced as the program develops.

"The volume of data processed in financial markets has increased exponentially, and traditional scale-up or scale-out architectures are struggling to keep up with demand without vastly increasing cost and power usage," said Niall Dalton, director of High-Frequency Trading at Cantor Fitzgerald, a company that is currently evaluating the technology. "HP is taking a holistic approach to solving this problem and working to bring unprecedented energy and cost savings for tomorrow's large-scale, data-intensive applications."

Additional information about Project Moonshot is available in an online press kit at www.hp.com/go/MoonshotInfrastructure.

HP Converged Infrastructure is a key foundation of an Instant-On Enterprise. In a world of continuous connectivity, the Instant-On Enterprise embeds technology in everything it does to serve customers, employees, partners and citizens with whatever they need, instantly.

HP's premier client event, HP DISCOVER, takes place Nov. 29 - Dec. 1 in Vienna, Austria. The event showcases how organizations can get started on their Instant-On Enterprise journeys.

HP's 3115m is the Pavilion dm1z rebadged for the business set, starts at $429

You've seen that laptop before. You know you have. Stumped? Okay, here it is. HP just announced the 11.6-inch 3115m for the business market and it is, for all intents and purposes, a rebadged Pavilion dm1z being marketed to a more buttoned-up kind of customer. For starters, it looks just like the newly redesigned dm1, flush trackpad and all. A dual-core AMD E-450 APU, 1366 x 768 display, Beats Audio and battery rated for 11.5 hours come standard. At the entry level, you'll also get a modest 2GB of RAM and 320GB 5,400RPM HDD. Oddly, 5,400RPM drives are as good as it gets here, whereas with the dm1 7,200RPM disks are the gold standard and you can even upgrade to an SSD. IT guys might prefer the this one, though, because it comes with HP's Keyed Cable lock and a Computrace Pro module for tracking and remotely wiping lost or stolen laptops (you'll need to activate this feature yourself). It'll go on sale in the Americas on November 11th with a starting price of $430 -- a thirty-dollar premium over the dm1z. Glossy press shots below -- you know, in case you need a refresher on what this thing looks like.

Stanford program cracks text-based CAPTCHAs, shelters the replicants among us

CAPTCHAs. In the absence of a Voigt-Kampff apparatus, they're what separate the humans from the only-posing-to-be-human. And now three Stanford researchers have further blurred that line with Decaptcha, a program that uses image processing, segmentation and a spell-checker to defeat text-based CAPTCHAs. Elie Bursztien, Matthieu Martin and John Mitchell pitted Decaptcha against a number of sites: it passed 66% of the challenges on Visa's Authorize.net and 70% at Blizzard Entertainment. At the high end, the program beat 93% of MegaUpload's tests; at other end, it only bested 2% of those from Skyrock. Of the 15 sites tried, only two completely repelled Decaptcha's onslaught -- Google and reCaptcha. So what did the researchers learn from this? Randomization makes for better security; random lengths and character sizes tended to thwart Decaptcha, as did waving text. How long that will remain true is anyone's guess, as presumably SkyNet is working on a CAPTCHA-killer of its own.

Goodbye Nokia 600, we hardly knew ye

Symbian just scored another blow. The Belle-installed Nokia 600 was announced in late August, destined to be a great music-centric phone for anyone trying to stay on a budget. Sadly, it appears its fate has been sealed before its release, as the company's taken down any pages on its websites that are related to the product. Then, if that weren't enough confirmation, it also broke the news of the handset's demise to a disappointed Facebook fan. We haven't been given a reason for the sudden decision to cease and desist, but we're not discounting the coincidence of this happening so shortly after the Lumia series was revealed.

iOS 5.0.1 seeded to developers, battery life fixes and multitasking gestures in tow

Well that didn't take long. After officially commenting on iOS 5's battery woes, Apple's gone and issued a beta of iOS 5.0.1 for developers to help fix the flaw. Per the changelog, build 9A402 fixes bugs relating to battery life and iCloud document syncing, improves voice recognition for Aussies and re-enables multitasking gestures on the original iPad. That last item is of particular interest to iPad devs, who had their ability to enable four-finger gestures unceremoniously yanked by Apple in iOS 5's final release. We welcome these goodies with open arms, but here's hoping universal Siri support comes in iOS 5.0.2.

Update: According to 9to5Mac, the iPad 2's Smart Cover passcode vulnerability has also been fixed.

BMW three Series gets 'full-coloration' heads-up show

If you've been hankering for some HUD action in your next auto, you'll have one more choice come next spring: the all-new 2012 BMW 3 Series. The launch will mark the first time a heads-up display has made it into Bavaria's volume seller, after debuting as an optional extra eons ago on its 5 Series. Since then, HUDs of limited hues have permeated München's high-end, splaying speed and navigation directions in the line of sight of road-going elites everywhere. However, this iteration is "full-color," which besides pleasing ROY G. BIV fans, makes it "more intuitive," as the company reasons it'll aid drivers in recognizing crucial alerts faster. That, or we're really just a generation away from über cool AR wizardry and movies on our windscreens. Of course, no word on when the 3's brethren will get the technicolor treatment, but we're betting it won't be long, given that's the dash of a 6 Series you see above. PR, per usual, is after the break. Show full PR textBMW Head-Up Display: Precision as featured in a fighter jet. This system was initially developed for aviation and is now making a decisive contribution towards driving safety.

28.10.2011

Munich. Low-flying over hilly terrain at a pace of almost 800 kilometres per hour within the cockpit of a Eurofighter jet is a challenge to even probably the most hardened of military pilots. "Whenever you're flying at tree-high top at around 220 metres a second, solely extremely correct head-up display know-how is able to present the required ease of mind," comments Wing Commander Robert Hierl, check pilot on the Technical and Airworthiness Centre for Aircraft.

By the use of a front panel projector, all flight-relevant data provided by the flight administration system in addition to data and indicators crucial to a mission are displayed on a second, vertically positioned panel located within the cockpit. As a way to stop the pilot from being distracted, all information is displayed in virtual form at eye level throughout the direct visual view, thus guaranteeing the very best degree of focus, supremacy and security for each the pilot and the machine.

BMW was the primary European car builder to adapt head-up show expertise - a system initially deployed in aviation and constantly further developed over a number of decades - for use in quantity-manufacturing vehicles. Since January 2004, this innovative driver assistance system has been an integral a part of BMW ConnectedDrive provided for the BMW 5 Series. Constantly further developed and optimised, it is now a full-color head-up show and optionally available for almost all series.

When it comes to graphic illustration, functionality and adaptability, the unique new Head-Up Show characteristic makes a big contribution towards active security by displaying driver-relevant data in excessive-high quality resolution throughout the driver's direct field of vision, so that he or she doesn't have to take their eyes off the road. An important gain in safety as researchers know: A traditional driver takes a whole second to learn the velocity indicator in the instrument panel or to glance on the navigation device. While the driving force is distracted, that's with out his or her eyes on the street, the automobile covers a distance of round 14 metres when travelling in urban areas at a velocity of fifty km/h - nearly a "blind flight".

With Head-Up Display, the time required by the driving force to assimilate data is decreased by more than a half, the system making a decisive contribution in direction of concentrated and centered driving. The virtual picture projected onto the windscreen is perceived as "hovering" at eye degree above the bonnet and is seen solely to the driver. Moreover, this form of display is less tiring, as the attention does not must constantly change between shut-vary and distant vision. Additionally, the brightness of the image adjusts perfectly to the surroundings, in order that the eye does not have to readapt every time.

The reproduction of information is effected by means of an intense gentle source, which is positioned inside the instrument panel and shines by a translucent TFT (Skinny Film Transistor) show, the image being transferred to the windscreen through specifically shaped mirrors. Owing to the convex form and the physical properties of glass, using the windscreen as a reflector is an extremely advanced process. In a windscreen, the sunshine path is generally refracted, leading to double images.

In the case of the Eurofighter, this drawback is solved by means of an additional panel positioned straight within the pilot's field of vision. BMW tackles this bodily phenomenon with the aid of a wafer-skinny foil, which is integrated into the windscreen, guaranteeing the superimposition of the projected images and, in consequence, flawless, undistorted representation. Full-colour Head-Up Show offers the motive force an incredible enhance in reading comfort. The entire color spectrum facilitates a sensible and thus extra intuitive show of pictures and symbols. These communicate for themselves, are perceived even sooner and wouldn't have to be decoded or interpreted. Even Eurofighter test pilot Robert Hierl is very impressed: "Our monochrome head-up display know-how is unable to offer such a brilliant show quality."
